Mr. Shulman, a partner in the firm, is a well-known trial lawyer in the metro Detroit area with an international reputation. He was born in Detroit in 1966 and was raised in Southfield, Michigan. Prior to joining the firm, he was the head of the Criminal Defense, Forfeiture and Licensing practice group of Fried Saperstein Abbatt PC. In that capacity, he guided clients through the complicated maze of state and federal criminal litigation and related matters such as licensing issues, forfeiture proceedings, administrative hearings, corporate internal investigations, and civil litigation. He has represented business leaders, corporations, political figures, athletes, celebrities, professionals and people from all walks of life through some of their most trying times.

Prior to that, Mr. Shulman served for more than seven years in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit. As a prosecutor, Mr. Shulman was a member of the Felony Trials Division and the elite Special Crimes Section, which prosecuted high profile and highly complex criminal offenses — including major narcotics cases, gang-related activity, public corruption, economic crimes, and homicide cases. He won acclaim as a tough, thorough, yet fair-minded prosecutor. Based on his skills, he was regularly invited to teach trial advocacy to prosecutors throughout the state of Michigan.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Shulman has tried over 175 jury trials and more than 300 bench trials, argued before appellate courts, and negotiated thousands of cases — a level of experience that very few attorneys—or entire law firms, for that matter—in any jurisdiction can match.

Mr. Shulman is committed to going the distance for his clients. In the course of prior representations he has traveled to a prison in the Middle-East to track down an essential witness, criss-crossed the United States to stave off imminent indictments, and stood at the middle of media, political and courtroom firestorms to make sure that his client’s interests were firmly and effectively protected.

Mr. Shulman is committed to using the latest in technology in courtrooms.  Since joining D | R | S, he has devoted a substantial portion of his practice to complex civil litigation. His extensive courtoom experience gives him the advantage against the typical "litigator" -- both at trial and in planning the strategies that will best serve the client's goals.

Mr. Shulman is married and has two children. A graduate of the University of Michigan (BA, 1988) and the Wayne State University Law School (JD, 1991), he is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell. Mr. Shulman is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Litigation and Criminal Law Sections of the State Bar of Michigan, and the First Amendment Lawyers Association. In the course of prior representations, he has also been admitted to practice, pro hac vice, in Minnesota, Arizona, and Florida.
